Summary

I simply love Nora Ephron。 I wish I hadn't read this book while I'm in a happy, healthy relationship。 The audiobook, narrated by Meryl Streep, was very worthwhile。This is one of the first modern books I've read where the time period bleeds through rather aggressively。 As a theatre person, I enjoyed the strength of these characters, though I am not sure this dipped into much more than a sharp, witty peek into Ephron's personal life。 I can't help but wonder about how Ephron (who often in her autob I simply love Nora Ephron。 I wish I hadn't read this book while I'm in a happy, healthy relationship。 The audiobook, narrated by Meryl Streep, was very worthwhile。This is one of the first modern books I've read where the time period bleeds through rather aggressively。 As a theatre person, I enjoyed the strength of these characters, though I am not sure this dipped into much more than a sharp, witty peek into Ephron's personal life。 I can't help but wonder about how Ephron (who often in her autobiographical accounts and essays writes the word "feminism" with a confusing tilt to the pen) would approach telling this story today。 But in all honesty, I don't care much about what she's saying, so long as she's the one telling the story。 。。。more

Yes the Meryl Streep audiobook is good, though the accents are not great。 A wonderful monologue from the very best。

If feeling miserable and laughing out loud was distilled into a book about the death of a marriage。 I've recently learnt about how this was a fictionalised account of Ephron and Bernstein's relationship。 But I'm going to just judge this as a piece of fiction。 This was interestingly told in a format of a "narrative cookbook" which the main character does professionally as a good writer。Everyone apart from Rachel and her husband are also miserable in their marriage。 The story starts when Rachel di If feeling miserable and laughing out loud was distilled into a book about the death of a marriage。 I've recently learnt about how this was a fictionalised account of Ephron and Bernstein's relationship。 But I'm going to just judge this as a piece of fiction。 This was interestingly told in a format of a "narrative cookbook" which the main character does professionally as a good writer。Everyone apart from Rachel and her husband are also miserable in their marriage。 The story starts when Rachel discovers that her husband had cheated on her with a mutual friend and confronts him about it。 He claims that he loves the other woman but has never fucked her。 The entire story is about how Rachel deals with this revelation and re-examines her view on marriage and love。 It also doesn't help that Rachel is seven months pregnant and has to figure out how to navigate her husband's infidelity。On top of Rachel's problems, almost everyone else are also cheated on but decide to hold on to their marriages for love or some other reason。 Really goes to show how some are okay with being given crumbs and the bare minimum (but fuck fidelity)。There are many brilliant insights peppered in random places, but unfortunately, there was no clear plot direction to hold it all together in a coherent way。 It felt a lot like I was reading the disjointed ramblings of a disillusioned woman。 There were also a lot of Jewish jokes being told by the Jewish main character herself and liberal portrayal of racial stereotypes - but nothing really came across as offensive against the clearly comedic tone this story adopts。 。。。more

3。25 Stars Hmm, so context is that I read this because Olivia Wilde posted about this in the height of DWD drama。 It's pretty good? Okay? It felt like a memoir, which was nice in the beginning but kind of got old as it went along (incredibly short tho!)。 Meryl's narration was great。 3。25 Stars Hmm, so context is that I read this because Olivia Wilde posted about this in the height of DWD drama。 It's pretty good? Did I read this because of the Olivia Wilde/Harry Styles/Jason Sudeikis vinaigrette drama? Yes, absolutely。 Amusing, if bleak, take on a food recipe romance。 Rachel’s voice is especially strong。

Just what I needed: light, funny, real

I was curious。 I'm glad I read it but I wouldn't really recommend it。 Lots of passages that feel canned like a stand-up routine, a fair bit of offensive language。 I was curious。 I'm glad I read it but I wouldn't really recommend it。 Lots of passages that feel canned like a stand-up routine, a fair bit of offensive language。 。。。more

Meryl Streep goes hard in the paint on the audiobook version, and by that I mean at one point she does a Hispanic accent that had my jaw on the floor in awkward shock。

He devorado esta novela que se lee como si estuvieses viendo una comedia romántica。 Sorprendida, una vez más, con la escritura de esta mujer y con su capacidad de convertir la tragedia en una historia llena de humor。 🙂

Absolutely loved reading this。 I couldn't help but draw comparisons between her story of complicated love among the newyorker jewish refined bourgeoisie and Woody Allen's movies。 While both have a humorous writing style, I found Ephron's style to be more light-hearted and well-humored。 Allen often explores deeper, more complex themes, but Ephron's writing is more playful and entertaining and I appreciate that her stories don't feel as victimist and dark as Allen's can sometimes be。 Absolutely loved reading this。 I couldn't help but draw comparisons between her story of complicated love among the newyorker jewish refined bourgeoisie and Woody Allen's movies。 While both have a humorous writing style, I found Ephron's style to be more light-hearted and well-humored。 Allen often explores deeper, more complex themes, but Ephron's writing is more playful and entertaining and I appreciate that her stories don't feel as victimist and dark as Allen's can sometimes be。 。。。more

Nora Ephron is witty as ever in Heartburn and she tells such a heart-wrenching story in a way that does not ask for pity, but brings the reader into the emotional turmoil nonetheless。 A very quick read, complete with plenty of recepies, of course。

Audio- semi short tale of a pregnant woman and the changes that happen while pregnant for her。 It is narrated by Meryl Streep- she was enjoyable to listen to。 Her husband is “in love” w someone else while she is months pregnant。 Characters are Jewish which plays a part in the story。

Jess Ferko

Utterly delightful portrait of heartbreak told through a singular voice。

I watched the movie version of this book during my divorce (ahhh, sympathetic rage) and so I wanted to read the book。 Some of the ethnic jokes in this book have not aged well。

heartburn by nora ephron is witty and hilarious and it is my personal (and professional) opinion that everyone and their mother should read it

Sirvan

Surprisingly funny, intimate and touching book, especially considering the fact that it’s written almost 30 years ago。
